Pedro Pietri was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on March 21, 1944. He lived most of his life in New York. In 1947, when he was three years old when his parents left the island to live in New York’s Spanish Harlem also known as “El Barrio”. He was educated in the public system in New York. When he was a teenager, one of his aunts, Irene Rodriguez who recited poem in the First Spanish United Methodist Church in Harlem, inspired him to write some poetry. During the 60’s, Pedro served in the Vietnam War for two years, and was discharged. When he returned to the United States, he was more liberal and against the war in Vietnam. He began to be noticed for his participation in the founding of the Nuyorican Poets Café with his other partners Miguel and Miguel Piñero and his incredible performance there and at other public places. He was characterized by the way emphasized his oral and dramatic aspects of the poetry. In his recordings he always demonstrated his acting skill, when he performed he appeared on stage completely dressed in black suit, wearing a black beret and carried his poems. He also used the tittle of reverend, another indication of eccentric nature of his artistic persona. It is one of the iconic writers of literature of the Puerto Rican diaspora. His literary creation presents a literature of protest and denunciation that characterizes the work of Nuyorican writers. These are projected onto Puerto Rican readers in order to raise awareness of the social and political subjects that are within the system of American society oppression. The Methodist Church where Pedro attended in his childhood, now was his footstool because he published his most famous poem "Puerto Rican Obituary". Pedro recited his famous poem in 1969 when the Young Lords took over the Church. This group influenced political activist Pedro fight for human rights of Latino immigrants, the health of Latinos, and fought against AIDS. Throughout his life, Pedro has published more than 20 volumes of poetry, essays, and plays. Unfortunately, Pedro Pietro died when he was 59 years of stomach cancer on March 3, 2004.
